Dermaplaner Aftercare: First 48 Hours and Week-by-Week Care
By La Maison Salon & Spa | September 6, 2026

Right after dermaplanning, my number one rule is simple: keep your skin calm and protected from the sun. Dermaplanning is a quick 15-minute service here in Short Hills that removes dead skin and peach fuzz instantly, so your fresh skin is more sensitive to heat, sweat, and UV for a bit. Keep it clean, keep it hydrated, skip makeup for 24 to 48 hours, and pause retinols and chemical exfoliants for about 3 to 7 days. If you’re heading out for shopping at The Mall at Short Hills or you’ve got a sunny commute, SPF matters even more than usual.
Your first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that prevent irritation
Quick goal: no extra friction, no extra heat, no extra “active” products.
Dermaplaned skin tends to look immediately smoother, but it’s also a little more reactive at first. For the first 24 to 48 hours, I generally recommend you keep things boring. That’s how you protect the glow.
Do this the day of your dermaplane facial
- Wash with a gentle, non-foaming cleanser and lukewarm water.
- Use a hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is a great choice) and a lightweight moisturizer.
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply if you’re outside.
Skip these for 24 to 48 hours
- Makeup, especially heavier foundations and setting sprays.
- Hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, and very hot face washing.
- Heavy exercise or anything that makes you sweat a lot.
- Direct sun. Short Hills summers get humid, and August sweat plus sun can turn “fresh” into “angry” fast.
- Scrubs, cleansing brushes, washcloth exfoliation, and picking at dry spots.
Week 1 after dermaplaning: how to keep the smoothness without peeling
Most people settle down quickly after dermaplanning. A little tightness or mild pinkness can happen, especially if you’re naturally sensitive. The first week is about protecting the barrier so the smooth texture lasts.
My rule of thumb: if it stings, feels hot, or makes you flush, pause it and go back to gentle cleanser, hydration, and SPF.
Actives to avoid (usually 3 to 7 days)
Hold off on retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, strong vitamin C, enzyme masks, and peels for roughly 3 to 7 days. If you’re used to these products, you’ll be tempted to jump right back in. Give it a few days, then reintroduce slowly, every other night at first.
Sun and sweat management in Short Hills
This matters a lot for people coming in around the Millburn downtown corridor along Main Street, commuting, and running errands outside. Freshly dermaplaned skin is more UV-sensitive, so I want you in SPF daily, reapplying if you’re outdoors, and using a hat if you’ll be in direct sun for a while.
The simplest routine that protects your dermaplaning facial results
You don’t need a complicated lineup after dermaplanning. You need the right categories, used consistently, so you don’t accidentally overdo it.
Cleanser: gentle, fragrance-light, non-foaming if you run dry or sensitive.
Keep water lukewarm. Pat dry. No scrubbing.
Hydration: hyaluronic acid serum plus a lightweight moisturizer.
If you feel tight mid-day, add moisturizer again rather than reaching for exfoliation.
SPF: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning.
If you’re outside, reapply. This is the step that keeps your results looking even and bright.
If you’re combining facial and dermaplaning in your routine, I’ll help you time your actives so you still get the benefits without that uncomfortable “raw” feeling.
When to reach out to me (and when it’s totally normal)
A little redness right after dermaplaning is common. It usually settles within a day or two. If you’re heading back to work, meeting clients, or catching the train at Short Hills NJ Transit station, this is why I push the “gentle first” plan. It helps you stay looking refreshed instead of irritated.
Please reach out if you notice redness that lasts beyond 72 hours, increasing pain, swelling, warmth, oozing, or anything that looks like an infection. I’d rather you check in early so I can guide you back to calm skin quickly.
“The staff is so friendly and helpful I felt very comfortable and relaxed.”
one of our regulars
If you’re in Millburn, Maplewood, Summit, Livingston, Springfield, or Chatham and you’re planning dermaplanning before an event, I usually suggest booking a few days ahead. That way you get the smoothness without feeling rushed if your skin wants a little extra calming time.
If you’re pairing dermaplaning with other skin services
Dermaplanning plays really well with other advanced skin services, but timing matters. If you’re not sure what stacks well and what should be spaced out, I can walk you through it so you keep results and avoid irritation.
I also keep a running list of skin-focused options in advanced skin treatments in Short Hills, which is helpful if you’re deciding what to do next after your dermaplaning facial.
