Manual Lymphatic Drainage: Aftercare for the First 48 Hours (Facial Lymphatic Drainage Massage)
By La Maison Salon & Spa | August 26, 2026
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (90 minutes, $185) in Short Hills, NJ
The single most important rule in the first 48 hours after Manual Lymphatic Drainage is this: keep things moving gently and keep your fluids up. In my 90-minute sessions at La Maison Salon & Spa in Short Hills, I’m helping encourage lymph flow. Your job afterward is to protect that work with hydration, light movement, and smart heat choices, especially in Short Hills when summer humidity can make swelling feel worse.
A lot of people tell me they leave feeling “lighter” and more comfortable in their body. That’s exactly why aftercare matters. The right 1 to 2 days can make the difference between feeling great for a few hours and feeling better for the whole week.
First 24–48 hours: the do’s and don’ts that actually protect your result
Quick checklist: hydrate, walk lightly, wear loose clothing, skip heat and hard workouts, and follow any compression instructions I gave you.
Do this right away
- Drink water steadily through the day. I’d rather you sip consistently than chug all at once.
- Take a gentle walk or keep light movement in your day. A short, easy stroll is usually the sweet spot.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Anything tight can feel annoying after lymphatic work, especially around the neck, waistline, or bra band.
- If I recommended compression for you, follow those instructions exactly. If you’re unsure what I meant, reach out and I’ll clarify.
Avoid these for 24–48 hours
- Heat: no hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, or long hot showers. Heat can increase flushing and swelling.
- Strenuous exercise: skip heavy workouts, long runs, or intense classes. I’m not trying to “keep you from moving.” I’m trying to keep inflammation down while your body clears fluid.
- Heavy lifting: give it 24–48 hours before you go back to pushing, pulling, or carrying heavy loads.
- Extra sun and outdoor heat: in Short Hills summers, humidity plus heat can make you feel puffy fast. Choose cooler parts of the day for errands.
Busy-day tip for The Mall at Short Hills and Main Street Millburn: If you’re running errands, keep it light, bring a water bottle, and plan a calm window afterward. A packed day plus heat tends to bring swelling right back.
Days 3–7: what “normal” can look like after lymphatic facial massage
Most people do best when they keep the basics going for the full week. Think steady hydration, normal sleep, and movement that feels easy. If you’re doing lymphatic drainage massage for the face and neck, it’s also common to notice your face looks a bit more defined for a day or two, then fluctuates depending on salt, stress, and sleep.
In Short Hills, I see seasonal patterns all the time. In humid summers, people feel puffier and heavier by the end of the day, especially if they’re in and out of heat. In cold winters, dryness and tightness can make you want to crank the heat and take long hot showers. Try to keep showers warm, not hot, and keep your room temperature comfortable, not tropical.
If you’re sore after your session, keep activity light and avoid “digging in” on yourself with aggressive tools. Lymphatic work is a different lane than deep tissue. I want calm, consistent support, not a rebound of irritation.
Simple at-home habits that keep lymphatic drainage massage working
You don’t need a complicated routine after a lymphatic facial massage. You need the boring stuff done well. Here’s what I recommend most often because it fits real schedules and it supports the result you’re paying for.
Hydration that’s realistic
Keep water within reach. If you’re commuting through Millburn or heading toward Summit or Livingston, bring a bottle and actually finish it. Hydration is one of the fastest ways to support drainage.
Gentle movement beats “pushing through”
Easy walks, light stretching, and normal daily movement tend to work better than intense workouts right away. If you’re a parent on the go, this is good news. You don’t have to add an extra task to your day.
Keep pressure light on face and neck
Skip aggressive gua sha, strong kneading, or hard rolling for the first couple of days unless I’ve specifically shown you a gentle approach. Lymphatic facial work responds best to lighter techniques.
Travel, trains, and same-day plans: how to prevent swelling on the go
If you’re heading back to a busy day near The Mall at Short Hills or catching a train through the Millburn downtown corridor along Main Street, plan for the two biggest “swelling triggers”: long sitting and heat.
- Stand up and move every so often if you’re sitting for long stretches.
- Keep your water accessible. Small sips add up.
- If you’re flying or doing a long drive the same day, keep plans flexible and avoid hard workouts afterward.
- In hot weather, try not to stack outdoor errands right after your session. In winter, avoid overheating in heavy layers.
I work with clients who come in from Millburn, Maplewood, Summit, Livingston, Springfield, and Chatham. If you’re traveling in, tell me what your day looks like and I’ll help you pick a plan that protects your results.
When to reach out to me after Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Most post-session changes are mild and short-lived. That said, I don’t want you guessing if something feels off. Reach out to me if you notice increased redness that spreads, sharp or worsening pain, fever, unusual swelling that ramps up quickly, or new numbness.
“I always feel like I am walking out with a new body!”
one of our regulars
If you want to keep the “lighter” feeling going, I’m happy to talk through timing for your next session too. Some people like a steady rhythm, especially if they’re managing swelling with travel, long computer days, or tough training blocks. I’ll help you choose something that makes sense for your body and your calendar.
